Most of us are no stranger to new styles of working. According to a 2022 study, a majority of the American population work partly from home, and almost 90% want to work flexibly. The hybrid work model is being widely hailed as the new norm, but remote and hybrid work are just the first step in the broader umbrella of flexible work. Flex work is a non-traditional work arrangement that empowers employees to set schedules that fit their individual needs and have a say in how, when, and where they work.
Diverging from the standard 9-5 office hours, the benefits of flex work begin with individuals. First, cutting off commute time reduces stress, while saving time and money. By reducing stress and other distractions, it turns out alternative working styles also increase productivity, make us happier, and improveS job satisfaction.
If these weren’t reason enough, flex work is plain good for business. Flexible schedules are attractive to employees, and can help retain competitive employees. It improves well-being by reducing burnout, and thus adds to productivity. Early-stage startups, already searching for funding, can cut costs by eliminating a physical workplace. Long-term, these small differences add up to a more sustainable business.
Of course, not every company can accommodate flex work, depending on industry and the character of the job. But overall, implementing flex work as early as possible where possible can help sustain your business, create a more positive work environment, and foster happy colleagues.
1. Decide on Telecommuting Options
First, decide how often and from where employees can work remotely. You can use a hybrid model, allowing employees to work in the office certain days and remotely others, or give the option of completely remote work. If your team prefers a hybrid model, make sure to keep track of when and which employees won’t be in the office.
2. Make Alternate Work Hours
Who said a strict 9-5 schedule is the path to success? Non-traditional hours like a 4 day work week, or 5 hour workdays might work with your team. Experts largely agree that a 4 day work week benefits employee well-being and productivity, reduces overhead, and saves time. Instead of taking time off during workdays, employees can run errands on their day off and maintain a better work-life balance. Feel free to experiment with your team to find what works best!
3. Support a Workforce On the Move
Of course, if you’re thinking of switching to flex work then your company will need alternate tools to accommodate for the lack of face-to-face interaction. It’s important to invest in devices that work anywhere, and can be conveniently used on the go, like mobile phones, tablets, and laptops. Cloud-based solutions are indispensable too, so everyone has access to up-to-date documents and data, from any device.
4. Invest in Collaboration Tools
Logistical software is vital to make sure all employees are able to communicate and are on the same page. Scheduling and calendar software, video conferencing applications, and communication tools are needed for day-to-day operations to run smoothly. Luckily, the options are many, so you’re sure to find the right tools. Slack, Calendly, Zoom, BlueJeans, Doodle, Teams, and Google Chat are just a few to check out.
All in all, everyone comes out on top: employees, businesses, and customers. Flex work may not work for everyone, but it’s worth investigating to see if it's the right fit for you.
